The Directorate of Climate Change and the French Development Agency (AFD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at advancing the development of the National Green Taxonomy.
Director of Climate Change Prof. Halil Hasar and AFD Türkiye Country Director Tanguy Denieul signed the memorandum, which launches the Technical Assistance Project for the Development a National Green Taxonomy in Türkiye.
Speaking at the signing ceremony held at the Directorate of Climate Change, Prof. Hasar expressed his pleasure to welcome the AFD delegation.
He emphasized the significance of the memorandum, underlining the importance of developing Türkiye’s Green Taxonomy and of defining criteria tailored to the country’s own national circumstances.
Prof. Hasar also noted that such projects play a key role in sustaining effective dialogue, adding that strong institutional cooperation contributes directly to the broader development of bilateral relations between the two countries.
Indicating that the Directorate of Climate Change has already completed the preparation of Türkiye’s National Green Taxonomy, Prof. Hasar added that Türkiye’s first Climate Law—expected to be submitted to the Grand National Assembly this week—will accelerate climate-friendly investments.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties, the cooperation aims to strengthen technical capacity related to the National Taxonomy that will guide Türkiye’s climate targets.
The scope of work also includes analyzing the EU Taxonomy’s Technical Screening Criteria across six environmental objectives, adapting technical criteria to Türkiye’s national conditions, establishing a National Green Taxonomy Platform to facilitate stakeholder engagement, and developing implementation guidelines and draft taxonomy reporting frameworks under the relevant legislation.
Head of Climate Finance and Incentives Department Mürsel Akbulut and Senior Project Manager Zeren Erik Yaşar also attended the signing ceremony.
