Deputy Director of Climate Change Mehrali Ecer attended the International Geothermal Investors Summit held in Ürgüp district of Nevşehir, where he outlined Türkiye’s roadmap for combating climate change.
Speaking at the session titled “Geothermal Energy in Our Net Zero Target” at the summit, which was organized for the first time by the Geothermal Investors Association, Ecer explained that, with its low-emission profile, domestic character, and sustainable structure, geothermal energy will make a significant contribution to achieving climate targets.
He underlined that geothermal energy is positioned not only as a source of electricity generation but also as a strategic input for agriculture and regional heating, adding, “Geothermal energy systems will play a critical role in line with Türkiye’s 2053 net zero emissions target.”
Noting that the Directorate of Climate Change is concentrating on policy instruments designed to channel private-sector investments in an effective and responsible manner, Ecer highlighted geothermal energy’s favorable standing within the National Emissions Trading System and Green Taxonomy frameworks.
He also stressed the need to further reduce the environmental footprint of geothermal systems in terms of greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, saying, “Strengthening compliance with environmental standards in geothermal energy is essential to accelerating investment in this field.”
