The 36th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol, organized by the UNEP Ozone Secretariat, was held in Bangkok.
Representatives from 198 states parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer gathered in Bangkok, Thailand, from October 28 to November 1, 2024, for the 36th Meeting of the Parties (MOP36) hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Ozone Secretariat.
During the meeting, negotiations were conducted among the parties regarding various agenda items. A delegation led by Mehrali Ecer, Deputy Director of Climate Change, participated in the meeting on behalf of Türkiye.
The delegation included Climate Change Expert Sezin Sönmez Erbaş, Senior Environmental Engineer Gökhan Berker Akbıyık, and Senior Environmental Engineer Dr. Ali Oğuzhan Narcı from the Department of Monitoring of Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
The team participated in contact group meetings focused on critical issues such as the Illegal Trade of Refrigerants and the Life Cycle Analysis of Refrigerants. Furthermore, bilateral meetings were held with representatives of the Ozone Secretariat, officials from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and private sector representatives to discuss current and planned initiatives conducted by our country.
At the high-level segment which kicked off on October 31, 2024, Deputy Director of Climate Change Mehrali Ecer delivered a speech on behalf of our country. In his address, Deputy Director Mehrali Ecer highlighted Türkiye's success in phasing out the consumption of ozone-depleting substances and the ongoing process of phased reduction in hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) consumption, which began upon our ratification of the Kigali Amendment.
In addition, Deputy Director Ecer provided details regarding the online licensing system established for the import and export of HFCs, the HFC quota application allocated to importers since 2024, and the three Recycling, Recovery, and Reclamation (RRR) facilities whose installation was completed within our country in 2024. Separately, the delegation visited the Turkish Embassy in Bangkok.
During the meeting with Ambassador Serap ERSOY, ideas were exchanged regarding the international activities of the Directorate of Climate Change and the ongoing efforts within the scope of MOP36. The delegation also engaged in mutual consultations through bilateral meetings with other party countries and implementing agencies.
