Director of Climate Change Prof. Halil Hasar attended the meeting of the Mucilage Scientific and Technical Board.
Convened in Ankara to reduce pollution in the Marmara Region and to carry out monitoring activities, the meeting was chaired by Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change Fatma Varank.
Established under the Marmara Sea Action Plan and bringing together a large number of academics from 13 universities, the Mucilage Scientific and Technical Board met in the wake of the mucilage outbreak that emerged in the Marmara Sea in 2021, with a view to reducing pollution in the Marmara Region and conducting monitoring activities within the framework of the 22-point “Marmara Sea Action Plan” and the “2021–2024 Integrated Strategic Plan for the Marmara Sea” prepared by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change.
Mucilage Reports to Be Reviewed
Following recent reports of renewed mucilage formation in the Marmara Sea, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change has taken action once again.
In light of the possibility that similar environmental problems may recur in the Marmara Sea, the Ministry’s relevant departments, the Mucilage Scientific and Technical Board, and academics working on the subject shared the outputs of their studies in order to assess the current situation and plan the steps to be taken.
In addition to Deputy Minister Varank, the meeting brought together Director of Climate Change Prof. Halil Hasar, Director General of Environmental Management Fatih Turan, TÜBİTAK President Prof. Orhan Aydın, ITU President Prof. Hasan Mandal, Environmental Agency President Prof. Ferhat Pirinççi, and many leading academics in their respective fields.
