A landmark 11-year collaboration between the Directorate of Climate Change and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) has successfully concluded. Since 2013, the project has focused on building national capacity for the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) of greenhouse gas emissions.

The opening speeches of the project, which concluded with the meeting titled “The Role of the MRV System on the Road to the Emissions Trading System,” were delivered by Deputy Director of Climate Change Mehrali Ecer and Dr. Christian Henckes, Head of the Climate and Biodiversity Action Programme at the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

“Project outputs will provide a critical foundation for Türkiye's transition to the ETS”

Deputy Director Mehrali Ecer highlighted that since 2015, the "Regulation on the Monitoring of Greenhouse Gas Emissions" has allowed for the tracking of emissions from 774 facilities—specifically 67 energy and 707 industrial sites. "We have successfully operationalized the Central Electronic Verifier Body Assignment System (MEDAS)," Ecer stated. "By providing extensive training to the public and private sectors, as well as verifiers, we have established a robust framework of guiding manuals.

These outputs will be providing a critical foundation for Türkiye's transition to a national Emission Trading System (ETS)."
