Organized by the International Environmental Communication Association, the International Environmental Communication Summit was held in Ankara.

Bringing together a wide range of speakers and panelists from Türkiye and abroad, the summit addressed key themes including “A Shared Path,” “Public Policies,” “Investment Finance and the Environment,” “Role Models,” “Media and Its Impacts,” and “Sustainability Communication.”

Deputy Director of Climate Change Mehrali Ecer attended the summit and delivered remarks during the session on Public Policies in the Green Economy Transition.

During his presentation, he briefed participants on new environmental standards shaping Türkiye’s green transformation in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the Climate Law, Türkiye’s efforts to combat climate change, the emissions trading system, carbon crediting and offsetting mechanisms, climate finance, the Green Taxonomy of Türkiye, Provincial Boards for Climate Change Coordination, and Türkiye’s hosting of COP31.

Deputy Director Ecer stated that phenomena such as droughts, forest fires, extreme heat waves, floods, and flash floods directly impact not only ecological balances but also economic activities. He added, “This situation necessitates addressing climate change beyond environmental policies, requiring its consideration alongside economic planning, energy supply security, and foreign trade policies.”

“The 2053 Net Zero Emission Target is not just an environmental commitment; it also forms the backbone of our country’s economic transformation, technological vision, and understanding of social welfare. At COP29 last year, we announced our Long-Term Climate Strategy (LTS), which serves as the long-term roadmap for the 2053 Net Zero Emission Target.  The LTS systematically defines our long-term climate transition through a total of 89 strategic priorities spanning mitigation, carbon pricing, technology development, and a just transition. And the Climate Law constitutes the key legal foundation of this vision. It also introduces significant innovations within the financial system. Through regulations such as green investment definitions, climate finance tools, and the Green Taxonomy of Türkiye, access to national and international financing for environmentally responsible investments will be facilitated. The Green Taxonomy of Türkiye provides financial institutions and investors with a reliable reference point by clearly defining the environmental sustainability of investments.”

The summit served as a platform that brought together diverse stakeholders to generate solution-oriented ideas.
