The Director of Climate Change, Prof. Halil Hasar, attended the International Climate Forum held in Uzbekistan.

The forum, hosted in Samarkand by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change of Uzbekistan under the theme “Central Asia Facing Global Climate Challenges: Solidarity for Shared Prosperity,” addressed a broad range of topics, including renewable energy, the sustainable management of water resources, the protection of biodiversity, climate-resilient cities, and the role of youth in the fight against climate change.

At the event, which brought together delegations from more than 80 countries, including leaders of Central Asian states as well as representatives of the European Union, the United Nations, international financial institutions, and environmental organizations, Director Hasar—who represented Türkiye—drew attention to the critical role of young people in tackling climate change.

Indicating that Türkiye has taken significant steps to ensure that young people assume an active role in climate policymaking and that its policy documents include provisions aimed at protecting vulnerable groups in the fight against climate change, Hasar said, “We promote their active participation in the process in order to develop policies that reflect the needs of young people.”

In a post shared on his social media account regarding the International Climate Forum, Hasar wrote, “At the youth session of the Climate Forum held in Samarkand, we stressed that Türkiye demonstrates its commitment to fulfilling its international obligations in combating climate change and that, through the work it has undertaken to date, it actively contributes to global climate action.”

“Today’s children and young people will be the ones living in the future we are building”

Indicating that young people’s views were listened to, Hasar also wrote, “At this roundtable meeting, we first heard young people out and took their questions. We then discussed supportive policies, incentives, and capacity-building programs aimed at opening up green job opportunities and removing existing barriers. We also addressed how effective implementation can be ensured by involving young people,” adding, with reference to the Nationally Determined Contribution, that “Türkiye’s second NDC will be stronger and more comprehensive than the first. Climate actions will be scaled up in a way that supports children and young people, who are among the most affected and most vulnerable groups in terms of health, education, and future opportunities. This way, no one will be left behind.”
