Under the coordination of the Directorate of Climate Change, the training program titled “Climate Change Adaptation and Sectoral Climate Change Impacts” was held in Edirne. Coordinated by the Department of Climate Change Adaptation and Local Policies, the program formed part of a broader capacity-building series designed to reach 600 local stakeholders across 20 provinces.
Covering topics such as vulnerability and risk analyses, sectoral impacts, strategies, and action plans, the training focused in Edirne on urban development, water resources management, and biodiversity and ecosystem services, with the aim of strengthening local preparedness against climate risks.
On the first day, presentations titled “Climate Change and Its Impacts” and “Vulnerability and Risk Analyses” were delivered.
Afternoon sessions examined the impacts of climate change on the transport sector and discussed potential solutions, while the theme of “Resilient Cities” was explored through good practice examples from Türkiye and abroad. The second day featured sector-based working groups, with sessions focusing respectively on water resources, agriculture, and biodiversity. These were facilitated by Water Resources Management expert Adnan Deniz Özdemir, Agriculture and Food Security expert Prof. İlkay Dellal, and Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services expert Prof. Doğanay Tolunay.
At the end of the day, participants developed sector-specific adaptation actions, presented their proposals, and concluded the program with a question-and-answer session. The comprehensive training program aims to strengthen Türkiye’s climate change adaptation capacity and to enhance knowledge and implementation skills at the local level. A total of 45 local stakeholders from governmental organizations, universities, municipalities, and civil society organizations in Edirne and surrounding provinces took part in the training.
The program was delivered as part of the capacity-building component of the “Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation Action in Türkiye Project,” financed by the Republic of Türkiye and the European Union and implemented with technical support from UNDP.
