Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change and Chief Climate Negotiator Fatma Varank, and Director of Climate Change Prof. Halil Hasar, who represented Türkiye at the Copenhagen Climate Ministerial Meeting designed to reinvigorate climate action and promote more ambitious action at this year’s UN Climate Change Conference, participated in sessions and delivered statements on the second day of the meeting.
Speaking at the “Implementing the Global Stocktake Outcome” session, Deputy Minister Varank said: “Achieving countries’ global targets in renewable energy and energy efficiency will be the most critical pillar of this transformation. If investments that modernize infrastructure together with digital technologies are supported in order to ensure security of energy supply, this process will gain significant momentum.”
Underlining that the success of global adaptation targets depends on the expansion of nature-based solutions as well as effective and inclusive solutions at the local level, Deputy Minister Varank added: “At this point, it is essential for governments to establish clear policy frameworks. By expanding access to financing mechanisms, alignment between climate action and sustainable development priorities should be strengthened.”
Director Hasar took the floor in the sessions titled “Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience” and “Implementing the Global Stocktake Outcome.”
Emphasizing that climate change adaptation is of vital importance for Türkiye as a country located in the Mediterranean Basin, Director Hasar noted that countries need roadmaps shaped by feasible, equitable, reliable, and tangible support aligned with their national circumstances in order to implement the targets that have been set.
Speaking at the “Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience” session, Director Hasar highlighted the significance of the “Global Goal on Adaptation” decision to be adopted at COP30, stating that different financial instruments could be used to finance adaptation, and that not only private sector projects but also carbon pricing and the mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement should be considered within this framework.
Recalling that Türkiye has made rapid progress in combating climate change and has doubled its renewable energy generation capacity, Director Hasar made the following remarks:
“To enable countries to implement the targets identified under the Global Stocktake decision, each country needs roadmaps tailored to its national circumstances, shaped by feasible, equitable, reliable, and tangible support. The energy transition is the cornerstone of this process. Achieving global targets in renewable energy and energy efficiency will constitute a key step in this transformation. As Türkiye, we have doubled our renewable energy generation capacity over the past decade and reduced the energy intensity of our economy in order to contribute to this objective. We continue our efforts to carry these targets further and invite all countries to take similar steps. These targets should be supported by comprehensive investments, including efforts to modernize electricity grids and to deploy digital technologies that enable the more effective integration of variable renewable sources.”
The meeting, attended by approximately 40 ministers from countries around the world, concluded with the taking of a group photo.
