Under the “Capacity Building on Long-Term Climate Change Strategy in Türkiye” Project, the Directorate of Climate Change organized a training program in Gaziantep to support the exchange of knowledge and experience on the transformation of energy and transport systems as part of efforts to combat climate change in urban areas.
Held in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the “Training on Climate Action and Energy Systems in Urban Areas” brought together sector stakeholders to examine good practices, regional assessments, and proposed solutions.
Attended by Abdurrahim Durmuş, Head of the Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Policies Department at the Directorate of Climate Change, the training highlighted the critical role of cities, which account for a major share of global and national greenhouse gas emissions, in addressing climate change.
Measures to be taken and strategies developed in the fields of urban energy and transport in line with Türkiye’s 2053 Net Zero Emissions Target were also discussed.
Group work and interactive sessions held as part of the training explored innovative ideas on combating climate change in urban areas and advancing the energy transition.
Participants developed proposals focusing on sustainable transport, energy efficiency, and the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
Through these trainings, which contribute to Türkiye’s long-term climate policies, the aim is to strengthen the climate action capacity of local governments and to make climate change mitigation processes in cities more effective.
