Director of Climate Change Prof. Hasar spoke to NTV about Türkiye’s first Climate Law, which is expected to be taken up by the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (GNAT) General Assembly in the coming days.
Prepared after an extensive drafting process, the Climate Law was submitted to the Office of the Speaker of the GNAT in recent weeks.
After being reviewed and approved by the GNAT Environment Commission, the draft law is now expected to be debated in the General Assembly and enacted in the coming days. Commenting on the legislation, Prof. Hasar emphasized that a climate law has become an essential necessity, stating: “Our world has now become a place grappling with the climate crisis. Unfortunately, climate-related disasters are becoming an increasingly normal part of people’s lives. In such a period, the world must act collectively.”
Stressing that Türkiye needs to become more resilient to climate change in all respects, Hasar said: “As a country, we must build resilience in environmental, social, and economic terms. Every relevant institution and organization has specific responsibilities to fulfill. With this law, the fight against climate change will no longer be voluntary but mandatory for each organization. We have action plans in place. All of them will be monitored, and their effectiveness will be followed-up.”
